The mayor of Pamplona, Joseba Asirón, expressed his satisfaction with the participation of those who enjoyed Sanfermines and the coordination between institutions and different groups.
The number of people who took part in the acts programed for the fiesta came to 1.5 million. The fireworks stood out with 424 spectators, followed by the giants and their entourage who beat their own record with 185,000 people, including many happy and excited children. The mayor also saw the return of the “verbenas” or outdoor dancing to the Plaza del Castillo with the participation of 140,000 as very positive. According to Asirón, the direct management of concerts in the Plaza de los Fueros resulted in a more varied offer and of better quality with the same number of spectators as in 2015. The mayor also highlighted the excellent functioning of the five areas, instead of two in 2015, supported by different groups in the Bosquecillo, Taconera, San Francisco, Recoletas and the Plazuela de San José in which 100,000 people participated.
Jazzfermín has become an important part of the musical acts of Sanfermines, increasing attendance from 3,400 participants in 2015 to 10,300 in 2016. Jazzfermin has also been returned to its original site in the Plaza de Compañia. Participation increased in other acts, such as the outdoor dances in the Plaza de la Cruz, activities for children and families and in Sarasate and Antoniuti.
On the other hand, there were fewer runners (16,448) in the “encierro” this year – 181 fewer to be exact. Reports of infractions increased, due to among other factors, the placing of six surveillance cameras along the route of the “encierro” from the plaza of the Town Hall to the entrance to the bull ring.
Rising awareness of sexist aggressions
The Town Hall´s campaign against sexist aggressions resulted in a rising awareness on the part of citizens. Thousands of people took part in the concentrations against sexist aggressions on July 7 in the plaza of the Town Hall and on July 11 in the Plaza del Castillo. Also the number of those who sought help from the information stand on this matter increased 118 percent. The number of reports of aggressions is similar to other years, but reports of touching abuse increased. For the first time, these reports were combined by all the different police forces. The mayor congratulated all of them, especially the Municipal Police for arrests of offenders and attention to the victims.
This campaign of 2016 was so successful in raising awareness to sexist aggressions that other cities are planing similar initatives. The Town Hall places great importance on how the media and different social agents treat this problem and is planning an international conference concerning it.
