Awarding of prizes in the VII edition of the International Competition of Photographs of encierro
In one of Ernest Hemingway’s favorite bars, the Café Iruña, the awarding of prizes in the seventh edition of the International Competition of photographs of the Encierro for Accredited Professionals was held yesterday, July 11. Once again the Iruña was the scene of this initiative organized by the Association of Journalists of Navarra and the Casa de Misericordia de Pamplona with the sponsorship of the Town Hall, the Café Iruña, Bodegas Chivite, el Corte Inglés, la Cofradía Musical San Saturnino and the Hermanos Aldaz, whose employees made the “tajadas” or posts of wood- symbols of Sanfermines that are given to the winners as reminders of the posts taken from the route of the encierro.
Twenty-four authors participated in this edition with a total of 65 photos. Of these, 31 make up an exhibition that can be seen these days in Baluarte and from the 18th of July in Condestable.
With this competition , images that best illustrate the emotions of the encierros of 2016 in different stretches are awarded. The winners receive fragments of posts and cobblestones that have felt the participants of the encierro run for their lives. In addition, the winners received a bottle Magnum of Reserve from the Bodegas Chivite.
The winner of this edition is Óscar Jiménez Barroso, prize Town Hall of Pamplona, with 1.000 euros and a cobblestone from the route of the encierro. Jiménez received the prizes from the hands of the mayor of Pamplona, Joseba Asirón, who said that the encierro is one of the events “most photographed” in Pamplona and in the world.” and thanked the photographers who participated with their contributions to create the “real image” of Sanfermines. The winner thanked everybody for maintaining this competition.”
The second prize of 500 euros went to Mikel Goñi from the hands of Maider Beloqui, concejala de Cultura of the Town Hall.
More prizes were awarded for photos in each stretch of the encierro: José Ángel Ayerra for Santo Domingo, sponsored by the Center Itaroa; Marta Roca for the stretch of the Town Hall, sponsored by Cara Vinagre, Ansoleaga 33, and given to the winner by Ulises Mejía.The prize for Mercaderes (Vinos Denominación de Origen Navarra) was awarded to Mikel Goñi by David Palacios, Presidente of the Dominación. The best photo in the curve of Mercaderes (Bar Restaurante Iruñazarra) is by Mikel Cia. In the initial part of Estafeta (Katuzarra), the winner was Alejandro Navarro and in the final stretch of Estafeta (Chez Belagua), Sergio Gago. The stretch of Telefónica (Bar Monasterio) had no winners. The Bajada Callejón (La Botería) was the winning photo and went to Óscar Jiménez Barros. The best photo of the Callejón (Reyno Gourmet) is the work of David González del Campo. The prize for the Bull Ring was left with no winners.
Three photos received a special prize from the jury for their quality: Carlos Mediavilla in the Plaza of the Town Hall; David Domench in Santo Domingo and Rubén Albarrán in the Bajada al Callejón.
A photo by Marta Roca is the winner of the prize by popular vote, receiving 77 votes from a total of 800 and are on show in the Commercial Center Itaroa.
