The town hall of pamplona offers San Fermín enjoyment in a variety of ways and places
The budget of the fiesta of 2016 has increased three percent this year.
The official program of the fiesta of Sanfermines 2016, which begins with the launch of the rocket (Chupinazo) by “El Tuli”, hurls up exciting content for everyone at any hour: Music, open-air dances, special surprises for minors, such as marionettes, family street theatre, festivals that feature sports or dance, Giants and fireworks among others. Between July 6 and July 14, there will be more than 410 acts and participatory ones. Of these 410 acts, 67 percent are musical ones, 22 percent are destined to families and children and six percent linked to bulls.
The Concejala Delegada of Culture, Education, linguistic policies and Sports, Maider Beloki, accompanied by Edmundo Irujo, artistic director of the company Artworks Communication, that for the first time is in charge of the formal design, has presented its program for these Sanfermines. Expenditures for the cultural program, public and personal toilets – the largest part of the budget – are 1.95 million euros – an investment of 3.5% more than last year in 2015.
“A fiesta without equal to be enjoyed from the top of your head to the tips of your toes” is the slogan of the graphic proposal chosen by the Town Hall this year among the many that were presented. The company Artworks Communication has as its goal for the design of the program of San Fermín to promote a common feeling between those of Pamplona and visitors. Also that San Fermín should be participatory – impossible to understand if you don´t see it with your own eyes. This is one of the reasons behind the choice of photographs, for example, feet and the ground where one steps identify different profiles and scenes of the fiesta “ that should be enjoyed walking its streets”.
The program, with a size and format similar to other years, will be on sale on Monday, June 27 in book stores, the Tourist Office and at the “tombola” or San Fermín raffle stands. Some 14,00 programs have been published in Spanish and in Euskera for the price of two euros. There are also 63,000 foldable, pocket versions in these two languages and in English, French and German.
357 Days of wayting
As this is Leap Year, the wait for Sanfermines has been a bit longer than other years: 357 days. Beginning on July 6 at midday, music will fill the streets and activities in every corner of the city. One hundred concerts and other acts on six stages: the Plaza de los Fueros/ young scene, jazz in the Plaza Compañía, out-door dancing in the afternoons and nights in the Plaza del Castillo, world music in Antoniutti, bands in the Plaza de la Cruz, jotas Basque singers and dances in the Paseo de Sarasate.
For the little ones, the place to be continues in the Plaza de la Libertad and Carlos III Avda. In this same space, there will be marionettes in Spanish and in Euskera at midday and at 8 p.m. Street theatre called “pasacalles” will have eight actuations, starting on Carlos III at 9 p.m. From the Plaza de la Libertad.
The Giants and their entourage will, of course, be present each morning, and at 11 p.m., the baluartes Real and Santa María in the Ciudadela will be the scene of the 17th edition of the International Contest of Fireworks – this time the edition is called champion of champions. One of the most popular events of the fiesta.
In the Plaza de los Fueros on July 6, the public can enjoy the Festival of Folklore and contests and shows of rural sports from July 8 – 14. A festival of “jauzis in the Plaza del Castillo on July 10. Added to all this is every event linked to the bullfight: the running of the bulls, the bullfights and more. Nine days awaited eagerly all year long with an international interest.
Like every year, the program contains days dedicated especially to collectives such as the Day of Bayona and Sister Cities on July 8. Children have a day just for them on July 11 as do elders on July 12.
The experience: Learning from observation
Sanfermines cannot be lived on paper. You must experience them yourself to fully understand what moves thousands of people from Spain and from around the world. In the photographs of Quim Torrens, you will see different types of ground – from cobblestones to pavements to the carpets of the Town Hall throughout the city. In May, photos were taken of the bull ring, the Plaza del Castillo, the Café Iruña, an establishment from the slope of Santo Domingo or the Plaza del Consejo, among others.
All types of footwear are included in the project of Artworks Communication, such as those of children, elders, runners of the encierro, the traditional rope soled sandals, those of people with disabilities, an emigrant and all the others who step on Sanfermin´s streets. The Mayor´s formal, shining shoes along with the new, pure white trainers of many true Sanfermin goers on July 6 will find themselves on July 14 with footwear that has lived the fiesta with all the excitement it deserves.
